Get Smelly With Science!: Projects With Odors, Scents, and More (Not-So-Ordinary Science) by Elsie Olson
"Get Smelly With Science!" is an informational text devoted to science, experimentation, and the scientific method.... through things that smell.
Each page features a different "Smelly" project, some with pleasant scents and others... not so pleasant, as well as a list of materials needed for the project, the step by step process, and even results to watch out for. Each page features full color photographs of the materials and even some of the steps. There is a brief description of the show more "science" involved and a question posed that the experimenter should consider.
On the first page, there is a quick vocabulary lesson, which I appreciate, as well as instructions for safety.
Overall, I think this book is a fun way to engage with simple projects and a very brief introduction to the scientific method. show less

This book is clearly for middle-graders to read themselves, and includes supplies and steps as well as pictures (though steps are not precisely matched to pictures). Includes food coloring on milk, coffee-ground treasure rocks, test tube rainbow (different colors in water with different amounts of sugar in them), jelly bean striped dyes on an old t-shirt, the chopstick stuck in the bottle of rice trick, the experiment with soaking gummy candies in plain, sugar and salt water, slime colored show more with foods (colorful berries or spices), ziplock bag ice cream, salt-crusted paper stars, vinegar-and-baking-soda powered rocket, pretzel-and-gummy candy animal sculptures, and invisible ink. show less
The science topics in this book may interest children, but the hands on activities in this book might make it even more appealing.
The Samurai are known for their strict code of honor. In this book readers will learn the origin of the Samurai, their development in history, some famous samurai, the key skills and traits involved and also a description of their weapons, training, as well as battles. There are fast facts, maps, inforgraphics, a glossary, timeline, index in the back as well as historical photos throughout the book. This is aligned with the Common Core Standards and I would recommend this for any collection show more looking for this as well as fans of the Samurai will find this interesting. It would also work great for reluctant readers. show less
