I really liked Casualties of War. As soon as I finished I missed reading it. I must I didn't like the way the Doctor defeated the golem or whatever you want to call it, but I still very much enjoy the book. The Doctor was particularly well realized and the supporting characters were fun.

An Eighth Doctor book which is set during the First World War, with the amnesiac Doctor now investigating mysterious happenings in a hospital for convalescent soldiers. For what is basically a zombie story, it is done rather well, with a particularly good one-off companion (Mary, the village midwife) whose emotional path is similar to many of the New Who companions, and other nicely depicted supporting characters. Would appeal to non-Who fans more show more than most. show less
Started out great, but suffered a very weak ending.

Emmerson wrote another Eighth Doctor book which I read earlier this year, Casualties of War; this one is similar in the setting - alien presence, which venal local human leaders try to exploit, not realising that it will do them no good - but a little more body horror and perhaps a bit less plot. Still, decent enough.
