Reproductions of fifty-one striking icon paintings of Mary the Mother of God and Mary as madonna and child appearing in a variety of archetypal forms and poses, some traditional and some modern. The paintings are by iconographer Father William Hart McNichols. Each is paired on the facing page with a reflection or poem by Mirabai Starr. Lovely book suitable for visual study and enjoyment of the icons, reading the reflections of Ms. Starr, and/or meditation and prayer with Icons, in the latter show more case Jim Forest's book Praying With Icons would be a great companion volume. Some of my favorites are Mother of God, Mystical Rose; Mother and child of Kibeho; and Mary Most Holy Mother of All Nations. In addition to Ms. Starr's prayer like reflections, Father McNichols has included as an appendix a paragraph on the occasion of making or meaning behind each image. -- Jennifer K., CSS library director. show less
