Reviews
Sublime farrago of out-of-the-way research, crowded with facts and yet full of life, assembled over a fifty-year period by the kindly pedant who was father to the Victorian politician and novelist Benjamin Disraeli. 'Curiosities of Literature' is his best-known work; Walter de la Mare, Kipling and Patrick O'Brian are among the authors who have found inspiration in its pages. D'Israeli is perhaps strongest on the political and religious turmoils of 17th-century England, but there is scarcely show more any place or time (as then known to European scholarship) in which he is a stranger. show less
Amenities of literature, consisting of sketches and characters of English literature http://www.gutenberg.org/files/36298/36298-h/36298-h.htm by Isaac D'Israeli
This is the final collection of Disraeli's literary notes, following "Curiosities of Literature" and "Miscellanies of Literature". It is an entertaining assemblage of anecdotes, character studies, literary memorabilia and stuff about books and printing. It is for sitting with in a big comfy chair in front of a fire an a cold winter's evening with a bottle of old Port. There are dissertations on the Druids, stories about Caedmon, opinions of Milton, descriptions of early libraries and a show more biography of Roger Ascham. show less
Curiosities of literature, and The literary character illustrated. By I. C.[!] Disraeli. With Curiosities of American li by Isaac D'Israeli
Kipling's Stalky & Co. led me to this and my sis found an old edition second hand. It is the perfect rainy day book for the book-sucker.
