Abstract

The aim of this project was to produce original music compositions for Chicago
Public Schools high school string orchestra students ranging from a beginning to
intermediate level. The need for new music is contextualized by a brief historical
overview of composition for educational settings. Discussion about the inherently
valuable pedagogical role of the teacher-composer provides further justification for the
proposed product. Understanding the curriculum of beginning students, as well show more as the
process, limitations, and opportunities regarding composing music for them, provides
direction for the creation of inspiring pieces of music that foster the technical
development of beginners while not overwhelming their average ability level. The
music produced was designed to support students’ technical and artistic development
as they move through between two and four years of string orchestra training,
progressing from an absolute beginner level to an intermediate level.
