While requiring attention this was a hugely readable, hopeful book that not only itemises how we got into this current position, but providing solutions to get out of it, and embedding hope that we can.
It helped me refine my views in several areas which was good, showed via polls that there is more possibility of the desire to work across age/gender/politics than the media and social media programme us to believe (baring in mind our media is 75% owned by the right and they want to maintain show more the status quo). That we need to look to the future not some fantasy idea of the past, while at the same time not believing that the only way forward is to throw the baby out with the bath water.
This is a sound, fact based volume, and anyone who has any position of power in our nation needs to read it, as do anyone interested in transformation of our nation to a nation that benefits us all, that enables a path to a more equal society, that understands the need for growth as we move away from entrenched stagnation, while acknowledging endless growth is not sustainable.
I think Bell might make a fine Prime Minister (he is a Labour MP), but the reality is, his skills may be better used doing what he is doing. show less

Readable popular economics read on the current (2024) situation of the UK - by someone who is now a Labour MP. I don't disagree with what he says but as with all these kind of books, there's a lot of this is what we "should" be doing - but very little on how exactly you achieve any of these things.
