This is one of those books that alternately makes you joyful and curious one minute and depressed the next. Humanity is a scourge and we have fucked things up enough that I won't be surprised if the ecosystems we've destroyed create a collapse that begins to kill us off in large numbers. I can only hope since something will be salvaged if our civilization exits soon. If not, there will be a lot of heavy lifting to do and sustainable ecosystems even more difficult to establish.

On the plus show more side, the way it's organized gives you a taste of particular types of animals and plants that I think is deliberately designed to make you curious and seek out more information about the subject. Since each section gets only a tiny fraction of what's possible to explore, it's a great way to find what really interests you and go down the rabbit hole. Listening made me realize just how much I do know about certain things like mushrooms, birds, amphibians and monotremes (got both types before he said what they were, but didn't realize there are four species of one type - yay learning!).
