Finished this today - and not a real "eye-opener" with regards to the information presented in the enclosed essays. Rather, five of the first seven essays were repetative in the information contained therein and their actual presentation - to the point I was actually wondering if they were indeed written by the same author with the words being re-arranged slightly. The only two chapters in this tome that were of any interest to myself personally was Chpt 5. - Frankopan's discussion of "The show more Alexiad" and Friedman's chapter (9) on women and captivity.

However, should a reader by new to this area of study, then this would be a good introduction to the role of women throughout the crusades. Being already familiar with most of what was contained within this tome, I came away none the wiser for my experience (hence the 2 star rating). show less
