The development of American nationality, (Vol. II of A short history of the American people) by Carl Russell Fish
The South had an undisputed world monopoly on raw cotton just prior to the attack on Fort Sumter. [143] As a result, the South exercised enormous economic and political power, all dependent wholly upon Slavery. [140]
The South was also keenly aware of the fact that "corporations" had utterly dispensed with the concept of individual responsibility: Quoting McDuffie [144] in 1828:
"Individuals are always open to impressions of generosity. But classes of the community, and sections of country, show more when united and stimulated by the hope of gain, being destitute, like corporations, of individual responsibility, are, like them, destitute of hearts and souls to feel for the wrongs and sufferings they inflict upon others." show less
