Al Quinn is a retired detective with the sheriff’s department and yet, he isn’t. Sort of. Al’s quiet retirement has been riddled with anything but quiet. There’s his brother and all that has to do with him, there’s his long time friend Fergie (a retired city detective), and then there’s the sheriff who just can’t seem to let Al go completely. Good thing, too. Because if his life was quiet we wouldn’t have these great stories to read. This time someone show more tries to dognap Al’s dog Tanner and that’s all it takes for Al to get pulled into something bigger that stinks of rotten highly illegal goings on.
Ah, how I love Al Quinn. He’s a favorite hero of mine and I’m giddy when another story comes out. The action keeps the tricksy and convoluted plot moving at a good clip and what’s not to love about the characters? The dialogue flows easily and I can usually finish one of these books in one sitting, if real life cooperates. I like how it’s hard to figure out what’s going on. I can make guesses, but it’s not until the end that the whole thing comes together. Perfection. show less

Book source ~ ARC. My review is voluntary and honest.
Al Quinn is a retired detective for the Sheriff’s Department, but somehow his old boss, Sheriff Clayton, keeps managing to pull him in when he needs a really good detective. He calls them “favors” but each time Al and his lady friend Fergie (retired detective of the Austin PD) have nearly been killed doing these little favors for Clayton. But this one seems relatively straight forward and harmless. He just needs to go talk to someone show more who says they saw a chupacabra, reassure them that the department will look into it, and go on his merry way. If you’ve read any of the other Al Quinn stories, you know this just isn’t going to be that simple. But first he needs to find a con-woman who stole the cancer fund money from the hospital charity drive that his brother Maury and sis-in-law Bonnie were running before their boss fires them for it. Retired, his ass.
I love Al and his merry band of misfits. When a new book comes out I can’t wait to see what Al is going to be investigating and how Fergie, Maury, Bonnie, and Tanner will help. Baby Al isn’t going to be much help in this one because, well, he’s no Baby Yoda. Ok, that reference will not work for anyone who isn’t watching The Mandalorian, but I don’t care. LOL
Al and Fergie have an impossible task of finding this fraudster woman. It’s like she’s disappeared off the face of the planet. But Al is stubborn and he likes a good puzzle, so away he and Fergie go trying to track down a ghost. I love the way one thing leads to another thing then another and suddenly there are guys trying to kill Al and Fergie. How the hell did that happen?! Like any good detective Al follows the trail and relies on his gut as well. Fergie has years of experience to contribute and she’s no wilting flower. There’s action, mystery, and awesome characters - I love this world! show less

Al Quinn, retired sheriff’s department detective, keeps getting pulled back in to “help” out whenever the Sheriff calls. Al may be a badass but the Sheriff can usually sweet talk him into the odd job. This time, his lady friend, Fergie (retired city detective), doesn’t need to go along and keep Al’s fanny out of the fire. It’s just a little training mission for a new detective. It’s when Al’s on his way home from this “favor” that he sees Fergie show more with another guy and looking kinda cozy. Wait, wut? Fergie and Al have been through so much together these last few years, nearly going to the great Detective’s Coffee Shop in the sky a couple of times, and spending their down time together. Turns out that Fergie is going out of town to help an old boyfriend whose stepson is missing and suddenly Al wants to give her a hand. Hmmmm…is Al a little jealous? We’re about to find out as the shit hits the fan in Texas.
Holy shit! Al and Fergie walk into a hornet’s nest in this one. See what happens when you’re just trying to help an old friend out? AND you aren’t even getting paid?! Damn. Told from several POVs gives this story a nice well-rounded feel. The characters are excellent as usual. The plot about the gang is a tiny bit goofy (or maybe it’s just them that’s goofy), but I forgive it since the action is superb. Also, I mentioned the characters, right? Al is a total hot badass babe and the characters that surround him are always interesting. If you like books about older characters who can kick ass and take names as well as unravel a mystery that’s also sort of a western then look no further. Al will deliver if it kills him. And some day it might. But hopefully not for a long long time. I want Al and Fergie to solve cases for many books to come. show less

Book source ~ Kindle Vella (an ARC was provided after actual publication also)
Al Quinn’s decision to turn away a musician friend who needed a place to stay for a bit has consequences he didn’t foresee. Now he and his new bride Fergie as well as the rest of his merry band (brother, sis-in-law, nephew, and dog) are on the run while they figure out what the hell is going on.
Woo doggie! This is one hairy ride! I always love to read about Al Quinn and the motley crew he has accumulated over show more the course of the books. Al, Fergie, and gang may be older but they can still kick ass. But boy do they get themselves in some very sticky situations. Eeek! I love the writing, the world, the characters, and the plot. When I pick up an Al Quinn book, I know I’ll be sucked into a world full of danger, action, mystery, humor, and heart and this book is chock full of them all. Especially the danger. I wonder what Al will get into next? I can’t wait to find out! show less
