Who Was Ellen White really? Satan is your destroyer, but I am your restorer. That is what the angel who stood at the foot of Ellen White's sickbed told her the night of November 3, 1890. It would not be the last time angelic visitors would come to Ellen's aid. Who was Ellen White, really? Prophetess? Visionary? Fearless defender of the Advent faith? Reformer? Prolific writer? Preacher? Yes. She was all these things. But that's where most of our knowledge stops. In Ellen WhiteFriend of show more Angels, author and historian Paul Ricchiuti presents Ellen White as a real human being-one who got sick, had pain, cried, laughed, and had close friends and bitter enemies. Yet she was loving, kind, thoughtful, and dedicated to her work. Instead of concentrating on what Ellen White did, Ricchiuti seeks to show us who she was. Drawing from little-know stories about her adventures, travels, and relationships, the personality and character of this truly amazing woman emerges with warmth and humor. It is my hope, says Ricchiuti, that we will relate to her today as a friend, knowing that God can use people like us to do His will. show less
This is the story of the four sons of Ellen and James White. One son died in infancy. Another died before becoming an adult. How did the Whites handle pressured parenting? What was life like in their home? James Edson White, having been a printer and the manager of a publishing house, became the controversial Riverboat Evangelist on the Mississippi. Edson was threatened by mobs of white people who said they would hang him if he continued his work. Some who attended his evening meetings faced show more gunfire on their way home. When Ellen White visited Edson and his wife Emma on the Morning Star they made plans for the development of a school in Alabama known as Oakwood College. When Ellen saw Edson's work for the African-Americans she exclaimed: "Angels of God look on with approval." Then there is the astonishing story of what God made of "Willful Willy"… show less
Ellen White walked into human history at the right time with the right message––a message for a world of many changes with men and women trying newfound freedoms. But as the 1800s were on, strange sort of unreality began to surround her in the eyes of many Adventists, lifting her happy on the reach of her fellow believers. The name "Ellen White" became a mystery. People fail to identify with her as a living flesh and blood person. In the minds of many she had become a sainted statue, show more rule book underhand, the fire of God's condemnation radiating from her eyes.To this day the problem still exists. Too often, well-meaning but confused persons have been responsible for a hurtful distortion of a gentle and lowly Christian lady, a true prophet of a loving father in heaven. The words, "Sr. White said," have kindled fires of resentment in the hearts of too many Adventists, especially among the young. Her work in words, writings and actions, have been wrongly used as whips on the backs and clubs over the head. Yet her life work was never intended to be used in this manner. Her lifework instead was intended only to point men, women, youth, and children to the goodness and truth of the Bible and thus to the grading good God of the Bible. This book was written to show a little more of what Ellen White was like––not as a superwoman or stone saint, but as a real flesh and blood human beings such as you yourself are. In this way, maybe the sweet flowing music of a better world that she heard can be heard by you a little more clearly. Ellen Paul B Richie Udy show less
