I enjoy a well-written fantasy, and there are no shortages of fantasies which involve dwarves. I've read many, played various concepts of dwarves in MMORPGs and table-top games, and so on.

This book was a breath of fresh air, though, and while it contained some familiar touchpoints to the other dwarvish depictions that you find in abundance, it also features an extremely well-developed dwarvish culture and environment, down to customs and show more relationships, jobs, personalities, and descriptions of history which led to the dwarvish society as shown herein.

Although there were a number of what I would consider "hat tips" to other stories and ideas about dwarves, I found this conceptualization intriguing and engrossing. I knew this was part of a series, but usually there is more focus on character development than story in new series. Not so here! In fact, I generally read the first book of a new series and never follow up with the rest because it just doesn't grab my attention. This one did. Very much so.

Not only that, but the closing scenes (prior to the Epilogue) were so well done that I started to second-guess everything I thought I had figured out. I found myself teetering on the edge of a cliffhanger ending, something I haven't had much of in the last few years - and which I really enjoy. The Epilogue only managed to kick a bit more footing out from under my already-tenuous grasp on what I thought I knew about the storyline and who the characters actually were.

I had not read any of D.P. Prior's works before, though I had heard the name many times from like-minded friends. While I received this particular book free in exchange for a review (which did not influence my personal opinion nor this written review in any way), I was so taken with this story and the writing that I am going to be using some of my saved up credits here [on Audible] to start obtaining more of this series, and maybe other books (if there are any available) by this author.

It's almost 4 am right now and I stayed up just so I could finish this book; I simply had to know how it ended. Now I do...and now I must have more! :)

Highly, highly recommended.

Quite an adventure

This was quite an adventure. I love what the author has created in the characters and worldbuilding. Very unique use of dialogue that helps bring out more of feel for the story world. D.P. Prior is a very good writer but I did struggle to finish this one. It was hard to follow at times. The motivation for the main character wasn't very clear which weakened the story, and created a sprawling storyline. However, the writing itself is good. It has enough for me to continue show more into the next book. show less
Carnifex (Legends of the Nameless Dwarf Book 1) by D.P. Prior is where we first meet the Nameless Dwarf and get a sense of his mission now. The reader finds out a lot about his manner, some of his past, and his axe he carries. It is a great action, fantasy, epic adventure I dove into not knowing what to expect and loved it. I couldn't wait to start the next book when I finished this one.
Husk by D.P. Prior is a fantastic thrill ride of a book! It is a fantasy about a husk hunter, a demon-type hunter, that is unwanted by everyone. You would think people would want to see him coming but instead they blame the hunters for the deaths in town and not the husk. What makes Jeb, our hunter, so good, fast, and strong, is that he is half husk himself. His mother was a succubus so it causes women to be attracted to Jeb and him to be attracted to them, but only physically. His downfall, show more gets him in a lot of trouble sometimes. The story revolves around him tracking a husk into this small town and finding that they have two husks there. The story his very creative, the characters are unique and very interesting, and Jeb is the main character but has his faults too. The writer builds the setting so you feel you are in an old west on a different planet where magic and demons are common place. Exciting with lots of surprises and twist. Love the cover! Picked up another book by this author after reading this book, it was that good. Loved it. Won this book on LibraryThing but that had no effect on my rating or review content. show less
