This was a “I’m bored, I want something to read” pick at a friend’s house recently. It’s one we’ve had on our bookshelves at home for a while, but no one got around to picking it up. It’s turned out to be a real gem!
I realized, after starting this book, that I really haven’t read much about Christians in Ukraine or Romania, so it was fascinating to get this perspective on their lives there and get a few glimpses of their culture—similar in some ways to what I’m familiar show more with, and very different in other ways!
The stories themselves were gripping; before I knew it, I was over halfway through the book, and regretting that I had to put it down! Each story is unique, but also similar in that these believers had to put their faith in the Lord—and He proved Himself faithful over and over again, even when they faced severe challenges.
This is a gem to have on any family bookshelf. I’d recommend it for children 10 years and older, just because of a few instances of severe beatings or other violence. It would be fine for younger children if read aloud with a little parental discernment. As soon as I finished reading it, I handed this book to my Mom, and she’s been reading it aloud to us—enjoyed by all ages! show less

This book contains some amazing stories of God working in people’s lives. It isn’t a particularly gripping book, since it is made up of many separate stories, but each one is inspiring and encouraging. It was a great peek into the life of believers in Romania and Ukraine, mostly Romania. Several of the stories are centered around a particular orphanage.
I really enjoyed this book. It was "light" and was meant to be that way but it was thoughtful and inciteful. I especially enjoyed reading Johnny's thoughts on his favorite courses, golf equipment and the golfers he has known that he most admires.
