Kenneth White (1) (1936–2023)

Travels in the drifting dawn is a book of travel, but wholly unconventional. Kenneth White is an entirely original writer and thinker. Born in Scotland in 1936, he studied in Paris and subsequently mostly lived in France. Most of his books were written and published in French. In 1989, he founded the International Institute of Geopoetics directing his academic research into the cross-cultural, transdisciplinary field of study which he had been developing. Travels in the drifting dawn was show more written and published at this time. Travels in the drifting dawn is one of the first books by Kenneth White to appear in English, although some of his other works were later translated into English.

The notes and parts of Travels in the drifting dawn were written between 1963 and 1975. They are not exactly the trodden paths, although White also visits some cities such as Amsterdam, most are travels in the countryside. White is drawn by the mysticim of the Celtic past, and free roaming of forests and fields. The book breathes the atmosphere of the 1960s - 70s of hippies. White was expelled from the university during students uprisings in the late 60s.

The language of Travels in the drifting dawn is poetic, often interweaving English and French. While the author may appear as a tramp, the book is written with great erudition.

While White's academic ideas have never entered the broader consciousness, some of his ideas may still go on, as some interest in his work seems to be reflected in the writings of Sylvain Tesson, paricularly in his Tesson's latest book Avec les fées. show less

Très joli livre sur une fort belle région de France : le Trégor, où a choisi de s'installer il y a plusieurs années maintenant cet écrivain anglais qui parler et écrit le français très élégamment.

Une apocalypse tranquille de Kenneth White chez Grasset : l'auteur, poète, barde, essayiste de talent, ballade sa réflexion clarifiante à travers le monde et nous la livre, allègre, séduisante et profonde, à chacun de ses livres. Et les courts show more mais denses textes contenus dans celui-ci nous entraînent à comprendre combien le concept oriental fondamental du vide est riche de potentialités pour la civilisation à venir. Car dans ce vide nous attend la paix de l'esprit et donc l'ouverture à soi, aux autres, au monde.
Ken prouve de plus, ici, que toute notre littérature occidentale tourne autour de ce "vide qui est plein" sans vraiment franchir le pas salvateur. L'intégration psychique du vide formerait-elle à elle seule la prochaine étape évolutive et positive de l'humanité ?

Première rencontre, fulgurante, explosive, avec la pensée érudite, poétique et humaniste de Kenneth White,
un jour de 1994, dans le rayon oublié d'une bibliothèque universitaire. 25 ans plus tard, rien n'a changé : les
graines de cette pensée ont poussé, en moi et ont été nourries de ses nombreuses autres publications
(malheureusement difficilement trouvables, l'auteur n'est pas vendeur !). Kenneth White rapproche les mondes,
prend le grand planisphère de la pensée, philosophique, poétique, par les quatre coins : il étudie, compare, fait
ou laisse résonner, raisonner, pour ouvrir des pistes, juste des routes, sans désigner, sans nommer. Puis il
