Rise of the Raven is an enjoyable fantasy book by a new author. The beginning was a bit slow but things sped up after the first few chapters and Drennon really showed his talent. The battles were very well written and Drennon seemed to relax a bit as he got into the flow of writing. The characters could have used a bit more development, but they were interesting nonetheless. I wanted them to succeed in the quest, and felt satisfied with the show more ending. Overall, a good first novel by a new author. show less

In Rise of the raven by Steven R Drennon, an evil wizard summons a demon to help him free his master from another dimension. He is opposed by the Khand, a group of wizards which includes a young apprentice who might just be the saviour of them all.
This is the first book in a series and it starts out rather slow. I found the prose somewhat stilted at the beginning but I persisted and I am so glad i did.
I am a huge fan of epic fantasy, especially battle scenes and, here Mr Drennon excels. His show more battles are vivdly drawn and completely captured my attention. By the end of the book, I was a fan and am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I believe this is Mr Drennon's first book and, like all first novels, it has its faults. But, if, like me, you love lots of actio and great battles, you should give Rise of the Raven a try. You'll be glad you did. show less

The first quality the reader notices about this novel-the action starts immediately. This theme recurs throughout the book, the reader is never bored. The events of the novel are fast-paced and action-packed, the main characters are intriguing and become like friends to the reader, and the plot is fairly unique. The reader will love the descriptive fight scenes and the undercurrent of tension running in those scenes, he/she will feel as if she is really in the moment with the fighting show more characters. The reader will appreciate that the female characters in this book are not weeping and swooning while waiting for a knight to rescue them; they both take charge of whatever situation they are thrown in and make for strong female characters. The male character is just dashing enough to pull the average female reader into the novel. This book has it all-an air of mystery and romance combined with action and drama. The author pays the right amount of attention to detail, the reader will not be annoyed by long, drawn-out scenes with no dialogue. The ending is very good and doesn't leave the reader on an unfortunate cliff-hanger. I would recommend this novel to young adults/adults who enjoy a little bit of every genre with a touch of fantasy. show less
This book started from the first page and kept on going to the very end with action. Chapter one begins with introducing you to the three main characters who attrack danger . The three main characters each have their own reasons for wanting to get to Avadar. The chapters had their own suspense and dramas going on in them and sometimes they did overlap so you had to keep reading to see what happens next. I enjoyed reading this book and would take a chance and read another novel by Steven show more Drennon. I wanted to read and finish this book to see how it ended. I am not an avid book reader. show less
