An interesting take on a family that has been written about ad nauseum, particularly since many of the prior works about Eleanor and Franklin have had opinions about the Sara/Eleanor relationship. That said, this author definitely had her own opinions about who was right and wrong in this relationship, which does make a cautious reader ask how Eleanor herself might have presented certain incidents. All in all, a good read, though.
Compelling bio about Eleanor Roosevelt and her much-maligned mother-in-law, Sara Delano Roosevelt. The mom-in-law doesn't seem to be such a witch, afterall.
The writing is clunky and the book is dated at this point, but getting any information at all about the Mars family and business can be considered a triumph. Crisis in Candyland details the personal and professional lives and business decisions of the founder and heirs of one of America's most successful candy companies. The book is largely anecdotal and relies heavily on published reports as the company is notoriously private about its business.
This double biography of Sara Rooseveldt and her daughter-in-law Eleanor is well written and researched and thoroughly debunkes the myth of the bad mother-in-law.
