Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936)
Author of The Jungle Book
About the Author
Kipling, who as a novelist dramatized the ambivalence of the British colonial experience, was born of English parents in Bombay and as a child knew Hindustani better than English. He spent an unhappy period of exile from his parents (and the Indian heat) with a harsh aunt in England, followed by show more the public schooling that inspired his "Stalky" stories. He returned to India at 18 to work on the staff of the Lahore Civil and Military Gazette and rapidly became a prolific writer. His mildly satirical work won him a reputation in England, and he returned there in 1889. Shortly after, his first novel, The Light That Failed (1890) was published, but it was not altogether successful. In the early 1890s, Kipling met and married Caroline Balestier and moved with her to her family's estate in Brattleboro, Vermont. While there he wrote Many Inventions (1893), The Jungle Book (1894-95), and Captains Courageous (1897). He became dissatisfied with life in America, however, and moved back to England, returning to America only when his daughter died of pneumonia. Kipling never again returned to the United States, despite his great popularity there. Short stories form the greater portion of Kipling's work and are of several distinct types. Some of his best are stories of the supernatural, the eerie and unearthly, such as "The Phantom Rickshaw," "The Brushwood Boy," and "They." His tales of gruesome horror include "The Mark of the Beast" and "The Return of Imray." "William the Conqueror" and "The Head of the District" are among his political tales of English rule in India. The "Soldiers Three" group deals with Kipling's three musketeers: an Irishman, a Cockney, and a Yorkshireman. The Anglo-Indian Tales, of social life in Simla, make up the larger part of his first four books. Kipling wrote equally well for children and adults. His best-known children's books are Just So Stories (1902), The Jungle Books (1894-95), and Kim (1901). His short stories, although their understanding of the Indian is often moving, became minor hymns to the glory of Queen Victoria's empire and the civil servants and soldiers who staffed her outposts. Kim, an Irish boy in India who becomes the companion of a Tibetan lama, at length joins the British Secret Service, without, says Wilson, any sense of the betrayal of his friend this actually meant. Nevertheless, Kipling has left a vivid panorama of the India of his day. In 1907, Kipling became England's first Nobel Prize winner in literature and the only nineteenth-century English poet to win the Prize. He won not only on the basis of his short stories, which more closely mirror the ambiguities of the declining Edwardian world than has commonly been recognized, but also on the basis of his tremendous ability as a popular poet. His reputation was first made with Barrack Room Ballads (1892), and in "Recessional" he captured a side of Queen Victoria's final jubilee that no one else dared to address. Reviews
This is a gloriously anarchic collection of schoolboy adventures, but also a political tract arguing that Britain's military and political strength relies on the training boys get by spending their teenage years engaged in guerrilla warfare against incompetent and self-important schoolmasters. Obviously, this argument has its weaknesses, but we can read and enjoy the book without taking it too seriously.
Stalky & co. is essentially the template for the post-Victorian British school story, in show more which more attention is paid to fun and less to moralising. Stalky and his friends find plenty of opportunities in the course of the book to mock the Eric, or Little by little type of school story. One area in which other writers of school stories didn't follow Kipling's example is his utter lack of interest in team games. Cricket and rugby take place entirely off-stage and have no significant impact on the story. Later writers obviously heavily influenced by Stalky & co., from P.G. Wodehouse to J.K. Rowling, invariably take the easy way out and use The Big Match as the dramatic highpoint of their school stories. (Since I share Kipling's distaste for sports, this was one reason I quickly got bored with school stories and moved on to novels written for adults.)
Something I didn't really notice when I read this as a child was how very specific the locations are. Although it is never named, there is doubt at all that this is Kipling's old school, the United Services College in Devon. Conventional school stories are set in old and distinguished institutions with long years of tradition; Kipling foregrounds the differences from such places. The "Old Coll" is of relatively recent foundation, it has no traditions, it exists primarily to make money for its shareholders, and it is designed specifically to get the sons of expat empire-builders into empire-building professions themselves - something it clearly does well. The Head is a man of taste with a good library, but does not appear to be especially scholarly. In moral and disciplinary matters he is a supreme pragmatist - Stalky and his friends take great care to cover themselves legally when they launch one of their escapades, but the Head just punishes them anyway if the result is that he has to listen to tedious complaints from masters.
The escapades themselves are what you remember from the book, though. When Stalky gets even with someone, it isn't a matter of a bag of flour on top of a door: it is a subtle campaign of psychological warfare in which the victims are made to bring destruction upon themselves. You don't have to be 14 years old to appreciate these sories - most of them work just as well for adult readers. show less

Il faut lire Kipling! show less
Somebody down below this entry (didn't leave a name, and that's good) said (he or she?) can't bear to read Kipling's poetry because he sometimes lapses into what we might call "baby talk". I say that's perfectly true. Kipling does indeed burble and coo when addressing the very young. So I'm 70 years old, a man grown, a former sergeant of Marines, and I burble and coo when I talk to my loving cat, Sam (who probably is smarter than most human infants).
But I wonder if the anonymous writer has show more read the Kipling lines that combat solders often quote:
"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
And the women come down to cut up what remains,
Just roll to your rifle and blow out your brains,
And go to your God like a soldier."
That sure doesn't sound like sissy stuff or baby talk to me. What it tells me is that Kipling had been there. Kipling saw it all and felt what he saw. He was a tough old buzzard.
Some folks don't like Kipling. As for me, I love everything I've read by Kipling thus far, and I wish Rikki Tikki Tavi would come and sleep with me and my cat Sam in our bed. Kipling wrote some of the most astounding fiction I've ever read. Those who don't like Kipling should try George MacDonald Fraser. If you think Kipling was a liar, try Flashman's account of the Sepoy Mutiny, the Rani of Jhansi or of the battle at Cawnpore Well. WOW!
If you think George MacDonald Fraser was a liar, you should know he crawled through the jungle on his belly and fought the Japanese banzai boys from one end of Burma to the other. Every once in a while, though, he liked to stop, build a fire, and "brew up". He died a couple of years ago and the world is a lesser place for that. Most of what he wrote is outrageously funny even for being some of the grittiest stuff I've ever read.
Fraser is (was) a rare talent. So was Mr. Kipling. show less

A mistake. Rudyard Kipling is a seriously unfashionable writer nowadays, but I'd enjoyed my only previous encounter with him (The Man Who Would Be King and Other Stories) so I was keen to try his classic adventure novel, Kim. Unfortunately, the story has aged very, very poorly.
I'm not referring to the outdated worldview or language (which are common criticisms of Kipling), and to be honest those features are not much in evidence in Kim. But Kipling's qualities, durable in the small doses of show more his short stories, are exposed in this long-form novel format. The thread of the plot, hard to gauge from the start, disintegrates badly during the hard miles of the prose, which is far too busy and chock-a-block with redundant dialogue and baseless noodling. Characterisation is similarly poor; the titular Kim never rises beyond a sketch, and his relationship with the lama lacks camaraderie or affection. The espionage plot-line (Kim popularised the term 'the Great Game') is surprisingly lacking in intrigue – that is, on the rare occasions when the reader can make heads or tails out of what is going on. For an adventure novel – for any novel, in fact – this is dull.
The only creditable part of Kim is its recreation of the "roaring whirl of India" during British rule (pg. 149); in this respect, and only in this respect, the fact that the book has aged poorly is a boon. With its dialects and rituals and its general chaotic portrayal of the subcontinent, it has value as a time capsule. "India was awake, and Kim was in the middle of it" (pg. 95), and this, in truth, is the only lasting appeal of the book.
There's little of literary merit to the novel; this is a boy's book (albeit a dull and needlessly complicated one) and its attempt to reach higher is clumsy. There is a lot of mysticism in the novel – with the lama who Kim accompanies seeking to free himself from the 'Wheel of Things' by finding a legendary 'River' – but it's all very shallow and unearned, despite Kipling's attempts to add some woo-woo resonance by capitalising words like 'Road', 'Search', 'Hills' and 'Sea'. The only point of recommendation remains the book's capture of some of the flavours of India, but as Kim himself says, "that is kichree – vegetable curry" (pg. 231), and I was left craving a bit more meat. show less
