Most of the book is devoted to diary entries of the masters who run a workhouse in Spotland, Rochdale. In their own language and style they come across as humane and caring people trying to do their best for the 'inmates' while drawing issues to the attention of the authorities whose response seems less than adequate. Entries such as this area are examples: 'Old Diggle as been takeing improper liberties with Mary Grindrod she is not in her right mind....we had an Irishman brought here last show more Thursday he died on Saturday and was buried yesterday' (page 46). It is a litany of illness, death and new arrivals and really very sad. show less
