- After many years of studying Ancient Rome Robert Colton began to focus on the last generations that inhabited the city of Pompeii. Fascinated with the evidence left behind, the people of the lost city became very tangible.
Pompeii: A Tale of Murder in Ancient Rome introduces Marcellus and Tay as the two nineteen year old men arrive in Pompeii. Marcellus, who narrates the stories, plays witness to the actual protagonist, his Egyptian companion named Tay.
Colton set out to follow some of the classical Roman theatrical characters with the assembled cast. The clever slave who pulls the strings, the handsome youth who isn't as bright as he thinks he is, the angry old man who attempts to foil them both and the beautiful woman who needs to be saved -are found in his work. Each character springs from the conventional purpose into story lines that defy convention. [retrieved 5/24/2014 from Amamzon.com]

Gaius Sempronius Gracchus Marcellus has been falsely accused of parricide and is on the run with his much more capable and intelligent, and rather mysterious, slave, Tay. Trying to track down the witnesses to his father's death in an attempt to prove his innocence Marcellus finds himself caught up in a web of intrigue and mystery in Pompeii.
A satisfyingly complex mystery with a huge cast of characters. I loved the central Wooster and Jeeves relationship between Marcellus and Tay, and show more definitely want to read more of their adventures and something of Tay's back story.
However, I do have to say my enjoyment was marred by the number of typos, though I don't know whether they came from the original or the formatting as an ebook. show less

Marcellus and Tay's cover is at risk when figures from their past arrive in Pompeii. Then one of the new arrivals is found murdered and another is accused of murdering him. The accused is innocent but how can Marcellus and Tay prove it without blowing their cover?
Another enjoyable outing for Marcellus and Tay as they successfully negotiate the treacherous waters of small-town politics. As usual their combination of Jeeves and Wooster and Holmes and Watson is a joy to watch and we get some show more tantalising hints about Tay's past. show less

Mrs. Xavier Stayton, a rich young widow at something of a loose end in the 1920s, decides to write a detective novel in an attempt to displace a certain other novelist in the public's affections. She goes to stay with members of her late husband's family in Bedfordshire to soak up the requisite atmosphere but fiction and reality unfortunately collide.
The reader is truly privileged to see this delightful work straight from Mrs. Xavier's pen, or rather her companion's typewriter, before the show more publisher makes the changes which Mrs. X herself admits may be necessary to ready it for the public. I am looking forward to her next effusion. show less

While preparations are underway to re-open Pompeii's arena for gladiatorial games, a severed head is found on a pole one morning, with the rest of the body having been partially burned in a nearby stretch of woodland. The fathers of the sponsors of the games ask Tay to investigate.
The latest installment in this series is a quick, fun read but doesn't seem to do much to move the overall story arc along.
