Read in contrast to Voyage Long and Strange and gives a good perspective on the English reluctance in the 16th Century to settle in America. Poetry may be responsible for helping inspire the first exploration
2606 The Founding of the Jesuits 1540, by Michael Foss (read 18 May 1994) This is a 1969 book which is part of the series called "Turning Points in History." It tells of the founding and then tells a lot more about the Jesuits till their suppression in 1773. The first part is very good, but the author is pretty tough on the Jesuits after St. Ignatius Loyola's death. This book has the ring of a commissioned book by a series' editor (in this case Sir Denis Brogan) and one can't say there is a show more lot of originality. The 'Select Bibliography' is not impressive, the citations being just author and title (no year or city) and all in all the account till 1556 was very good but thereafter it jumped around a lot and sounded pretty opinionated. show less

75 songs, divided into Nursery Rhymes, Dancing Songs, American Songs, Traditional English Songs, Songs of Scotland and Ireland. Includes a couple of Christmas carols, sea shanties, and extra words to things you think you know but don't fully...
2523 Poetry of the World Wars Edited by Michael Foss (read 24 Jul 1993) Most of these poems I did not like. The poems that move me are the poems I know.
