A gut-wrenchingly close fight between Sawamura (who's been cheating! Again!) and Makunouchi...
With every exchange of blows, I kept wishing 'please don't be defeated, Ippo'. We'll know the outcome in the next volume (really, Morikawa is he master of the cliffhanger...)

On another note, did Miyata just turn dark? He keeps hoping for 'the destruction of Makunouchi'. ?! And that while Mashiba is in the audience, hoping Ippo will win? (He has his own reason for hating Sawamura, but I don't want to show more give too much away...(something that happened in #53...)). show less
This was mind-blowingly tense. I have bitemarks on my hand. Seriously. And on more than one occasion I almost started to cry. Which is soooo not me.
Damnit.
It's been ages since I read this, and it's stil as good as 15 years ago.

It's a story about determination, perseverance and ambition, set against a brutal boxing background. The start of a brilliant journey...
So usually, the volume after a big fight is a bit slower, lighter. Not this one.
Lots of emotions whilst Ippo is recovering, especially the part about his dad (although we already kind of knew what happened to him, but the real story is... heavy). And then all the emotions with the Umezawa thing (I don't want to give anything away)...
And it looks like the fight with Miyata won't be happening for several more volumes...
