Cassie Walker is dreading her approaching 25th birthday as it brings back memories of the accident that caused her family's death. Now, at the insistence of a therapist, Cassie returns to her home town of Elliot, Indiana and her family's home. She hopes that confronting the past will help with her ability to sleep and the shadows that have been creeping in. What Cassie finds, however, is a book left by her mother telling her that she is a demon and will begin growing horns and feeling a hunger for things. On the upside, Cassie reconnects with her friend Josh and he encourages her to enter the annual Demon Run in Woodland Creek. While dealing with all of her changes, Cassie realizes that things are amiss in Woodland Creek, especially with her friend, Jenn. As Cassie finds out more about her demon lineage and the benefits, she must fight the other powers in Woodland Creek.

The Good Girl's Guide to Being a Demon is a fun novella with wonderful characters in a fun setting. I felt an immediate connection with Cassie as a totally normal woman with everyday problems and trying to fight off her demons, only her demons are real. For a novella, the writing pulled me into the story quickly. I had a good sense of who Cassie was, where she came from and the setting. The story took off quickly as Cassie entered Woodland Creek. I enjoyed her journey to becoming a demon and uncovering her mother's letters and her supernatural history. The drama between Cassie and her friends Josh and Jenn was compelling and suspenseful and Cassie attempted to figure out what was happening in Woodland Creek along with what was happening in her own body. The ending wrapped up a little suddenly for me with a time jump, but was still satisfying. The Good Girl's Guide to Being a Demon is part of a series all taking place in Woodland Creek, so I might have to check some of those out!

Eeek.. I feel so bad giving this book two stars because it was so well written. The trouble was I did not like the storyline nor did I like the characters in the book. I thought that it was quirky at times but annoyingly so at others. I personally did not like Spring and felt that she really really drove me batty. I thought that by the end of the book I knew what was going to happen and I was really wishing for that "surprise factor that never happened. I thought that it had great potential but I just could not get into the book.

This book isn't just about witches but about family too. It was lengthy is some parts but overall it was a great read. I found myself unable to put it down and finished in two days. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

All of us at some point in our lives struggle to appreciate what we have. We often compare our lives to another and ask why our own cannot be better in some way. When we start to complain too much someone a little wiser will suggest that," the grass is not always greener on the other side". This book is an example of this common saying. It tells the story of a young woman who constantly struggles with her identity, history, and heritage. She is overwhelmed by the responsibility that her mother and town has placed on her and wants to break from it. She is Maggie the reluctant witch. A woman so unhappy with her planned future that she runs away with a stranger and joins a commune. Seven years she endures life at a commune, but slowly grows weary of it and her cheating lover. Being faithful to her past she once again runs away from the commune to eventually head back home to help take care of her ailing mother. From their Maggie gets reacquainted with long lost friends and family and realizes that maybe life was not so bad. I don't want to disclose anymore of the story and would rather you find out what happens on your own.

I truly enjoyed this book and must thank the author for gifting me with a free copy. I was not too sure how I would feel about this book, since I have never been a huge fan of witches, etc. However, I am happy that she did! The story was full of action, drama, and just really interesting. I found myself finishing this book in about three days and that was because I had to chase after my children. I strongly recommend this book and I am positive you will enjoy it just as much as I did. My hat is off to you author for doing such a great job on your story through and through!
