Baklanov recreates the emotions of a 19 year old Russian soldier through the retreat and advance on the WW2 eastern front with his comrades, action, hospitalization, love and recovery. The book is an absolutely heartbreaking memorial and it is called "Forever Nineteen" since Volodya Tretyakov, like almost all his friends, dies before his 20th birthday.

The rawest, most personal soviet novel of world war II that I have read. Very powerful.
