About the Author

Illustrator Cicely Mary Barker was born in Croydon, England in 1895. As a child she spent much of her time drawing and painting, and her father enrolled her in art courses at the age of 13. She sold her first work two years later to a stationery printer. Barker was elected a life member of Croydon show more Art Society a year after that. She is most famous for her Flower Fairy series of books and was greatly influenced artistically by Kate Greenaway and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Barker used real-life models for her paintings, created only botanically accurate flowers, and worked primarily in watercolor with pen and ink. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

This book has been a part of my life since I was a young girl, and I have shared it with my own daughter. As a child, this book inspired me as well as my brother to explore the earth around us with rose-colored glasses. We saw a magical yard after reading this book and would read this book together over and over for instructions and details on finding fairies for years. The illustrations and interactive pages created a fantasy world for us and are now creating that world for my daughter. I would recommend this book to any child or adult. It contains illustrations for the smallest children to the oldest. If showing this book to a child younger than five, I would protect the pages and cover; however, the book is soft and will not harm the child. The child may or may not accidentally harm the book. There is writing that adults may even find interesting. This book will always be one of my favorites.… (more)

I’ve owned this little book for years, mostly for the lovely illustrations (yes, I am a sucker for botanical fairies). Delighted to realize upon re-reading that the short poems tell you what is edible in the hedgerows, and what birds or butterflies each sustains in the fall, and what to avoid eating, or to use for jam. It’s a whole wealth of gardening and ecological information in a tiny beautiful package. How cool!
