(Ashland, Ore.) – Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library will present a free lecture and book-signing on Thursday, February 26, at 4 pm in the Meese Meeting Room. Dr. Edwin Battistella, Professor of English and Writing at Southern Oregon University will share the story of Sherwin Cody and his famous mail-order English course. One of the most famous ads of all time, the Cody story illustrates the evolution of American notions of the role of language in success and failure, in the history of marketing and education, and in the rise of popular culture in the early twentieth century. Dr. Battistella is the author of three previous books on grammar and language, including "Bad Language: Are Some Words Better Than Others?" The SOU Bookstore will provide copies of Dr. Battistella's books for purchase, including "Do You Make These Mistakes in English? The Story of Sherwin Cody's Famous Language School." For more information on this free event, please contact Hannon Library at 541-552-6835. (TheBooknerd)
