René Bazin (1853-1927) est un écrivain français, juriste et professeur de droit.

Originaire d'une famille bourgeoise d'Angers, René Bazin commence ses études à Angers puis s'oriente vers le droit. Il obtient une licence (Paris) puis un doctorat à la faculté catholique d'Angers en 1877. Il est nommé professeur dans cette même faculté en 1882 ou il enseigne le droit criminel.

Les premiers écrits de René Bazin paraissent en 1883. Son oeuvre comprend plus de soixante ouvrages : romans, biographies, contes et récits de jeunesse, essais et nouvelles, chroniques de voyages et récits de la guerre 14-18. En 1903, il est élu à l'Académie française

Chrétien social et fervent catholique, René Bazin est porté toute sa vie par ses convictions religieuses qui guident son oeuvre. Précurseur des intellectuels catholiques et chrétiens sociaux, René Bazin s'efforce de promouvoir dans ses écrits des conditions de travail humaines et le respect de la personne. Il met en valeur la noblesse de cœur et l'humilité. Ses romans ont le plus souvent pour cadre le milieu rural et paysan de l'ouest de la France.
