Call or stop in for more details! Next Meeting: Sunday, October 26th @ 2:00pm Discussing: Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake Description:
Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.
So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father's mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. They follow legends and local lore, destroy the murderous dead, and keep pesky things like the future and friends at bay.
Searching for a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas expects the usual: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he's never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.
Yet she spares Cas's life.

Talk and Signing with Acclaimed YA Author Kendare Blake (Eastwood) Kendare Blake exploded onto the Young Adult scene with her debut novel, Anna Dressed in Blood in 2011, and its well-received sequel, Girl of Nightmares, in 2012. The books earned starred reviews, landed on recommended reading and awards lists (including feature as a ALA/YALSA’s Best Fiction for Young Adults selection and as an ALA/YALSA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers), and Anna Dressed in Blood was named one of NPR’s Top 5 YA Novels of the Year and Kirkus Reviews' Best Teen Books of 2011. (Anna is being developed for film by Stephenie Meyer’s company, Fickle Fish Films) Now, Kendare Blake is back with an exhilarating new series, that began last year with Antigoddess, and continues with this fall’s Mortal Gods (On-sale on October 14, 2014). The Goddess War series has earned rave reviews thus far. Publishers Weekly called Antigoddess “a gory, thrilling vision of the twilight of the gods,” in its starred review, and Kirkus Reviews says that “this new series from one of the best up-and-coming horror/suspense writers around updates Greek mythology but offers far more than a Percy Jackson retread.” We’ll have a giveaway drawing for a bag of upcoming young adult releases as well, so make sure you save the date!

Kendare Blake and Gretchen McNeil Sign in Redondo Beach Kendare BlakeGretchen McNeilJonathan Maberry (Fire & Ash, Extinction Machine) calls Kendare Blake’s Antigoddess “... a riveting and chilling horror thriller that deftly blends ancient legends with modern horrors. Highly recommended.” Maryelizabeth agrees and you can find her review of Antigoddess on the bottom of this page. For former opera singer Gretchen McNeil, writing seems to be a natural career change. After all, opera is a form of telling tragic and dramatic stories through music. Gretchen, who also sings with the Los Angeles based circus troupe Cirque Berzerk, and is a founding member of YARebels, switches genres for her latest YA novel, 3:59, moving from horror to science fiction.

You know, that old chestnut. She received a Bachelor's degree in Business from Ithaca College and a Master's degree in Writing from Middlesex University in London. She brakes for animals, the largest of which was a deer, which sadly didn't make it, and the smallest of which was a mouse, which did, but it took forever. Amongst her likes are Greek Mythology, rare red meat and veganism. She also enjoys girls who can think with the boys like Ayn Rand, and boys who scare the morality into people, like Bret Easton Ellis.
