Louis Paul Boon was the first Belgian representative of the postwar antiestablishment novelists who have dominated the Dutch literary scene for the last 50 years. He is best remembered for his eloquent outspokenness in a variety of areas. Once an anarchistic communist, he gradually mellowed to individualistic socialist; he was openly antireligious; he had revolutionary views on sex which shocked his compatriots. Because of his critical attitude, Boon has been accused of nihilism, but viewed from a different perspective, he could be called an idealistic, unconventional reformer. Once anautomobile painter, Boon champions the working class while at the same time giving his novels a wide philosophical scope. Boon was one of the first to experiment with possibilities for a new form of the novel, representing occurrences on three different time levels and mixing historical elements with contemporary and imaginary ones. For his collected works Boon was nominated by Dutch and Belgian authorities for the Nobel Prize. Boon died in 1979. (Bowker Author Biography)
