The Cat Owner's Problem Solver by John Bower
This book covers a wide range of information, although it does not go into much depth on any particular subject. It serves as a good quick reference, a first stop on your way to more detailed information. I would actually recommend people read this before they get a cat, or during the first days of cat ownership, as a brief yet informative tour of what you're getting into. For long-standing cat owners, you'll be left wanting.

Most experienced dog owners probably know at least 25% of what's in this book. It's a good reference to have around for experienced dog owners and an absolute necessity for anyone thinking of getting their first dog.
Despite being an otherwise praise-worthy book, there are two glaring omissions - skunks & porcupines. For rural dwellers, these are two of the biggest issues of all. I can't imagine how they've been overlooked.
Errr.... oops. I just noticed a comment I received almost a year ago regarding my comment on skunks & porcupines. It turns out the authors of this book are from the UK. They don't have a whole lot of North American pests over there - their loss. Imagine living your whole life without ever enjoying the aroma of skunk spray. How do they live with themselves?… (more)

Enough to get you started without bamboozling you with information this is a good and easy to navigate book on cats. Deals with everything from kittens to older cats.
