This is a competent account of events that followed as the UK slid away from a long-term ally in the far East in order to assuage the American's desire to punish Japan for impoverishing the Chinese market. There were many nudges towards the final war which might have gone a good deal differently if the USA had not dictated this policy. But the Japanese would have been a difficult ally at best, so....
