This book first saw the light of day, appropriately enough, as Great Tales of Mystery in 1960 but was mysteriously renamed Great Tales of Terror three years later. As I was looking for something suitably spooky for Hallowe'en this collection of stories didn't fit the bill. That said, there is much to enjoy in here, and features tales by G.K. Chesterton, Edgar Wallace and Leslie Charteris, none of whom I'd ever read before. My favourite was The Absent-Minded Coterie by Robert Barr, a droll yarn featuring the French sleuth Eugene Valmont. If you seek something light and undemanding to read, you could do worse than this. Lovers of spine-tinglers, however, should look elsewhere.… (more)
