Short biography
Born the grandson of one king of France and nephew of another, Charles, Duke of Orléans entered a turbulent era of feuding dynastic factions in France (his father was assassinated by the Duke of Burgundy). He was taken prisoner in the Battle of Agincourt and spent 25 years in England, during which time he had the leisure to write the poetry that earned him the renown as one of the preeminent French poets of the Middle Ages. His son became King Louis XII.
