I have to admit a potential bias in reviewing this as I studied under Prof. Charlton during my French Studies degree in the late 1980's at the University of Warwick.[return][return]This book was recommended to our year as an ideal introduction to French Studies. I thought that this was simply the professor's colleagues trying to promote their colleague's book, so I never bought it. I did get my degree though! About fifteeen years later I was given it in a collection of books that would otherwise have been given to charity and I read some of the essays. I then realised that I should have read it when I was an undergraduate as it really is a fine introduction to French Studies by the late Prof. Charlton.… (more)
