As the novel begins, we learn of the close tie between Chicago Police Detective, Ralph Shepard, and his ten -year-old son, Derek.

Ralph gets to work on a big case and when he is getting close to having enough evidence to arrest underworld crime lord Victor Lagano, Ralph is gunned down in front of Derek and Derek's lifelong friend, Jimmy.

The boys grow up, Jimmy enters a university and Derek goes to community college, then joins the police academy. Jimmy takes a course run by the FBI and is show more later recruited into a so called specialized unit dealing with witness protection, run by Marcus Web. However, this unit isn't all that it seems.

In a major coincidence, as Derek becomes a cop and is seeking evidence against Lagano, he meets a beautiful woman named Rebecca. They have a one day romance and then Rebecca disappears. When Derek is getting discouraged he goes to a concert and sees Rebecca with her husband, Victor Lagano.

The rest of the story deals with Rebecca attempting to get information about Lagano and the possible reprecussions of that. Also, we see what the FBI unit that Jimmy is a part of, is unscrupulous.

For a first novel, the author provided a good story and gives the reader plenty of action.

However, a couple of flaws. When Derek sees his father killed, his father's boss is Frank Szymanaski. Derek is described as a teenager. Derek grows up, goes to college, enters the police department and gets to be a detective and Szmanaski is still the supervisor. This couldn't happen. People don't stay in these positions for a length of time that looks like ten to twelve years. In hazardous duty, the stay on position is never that long.
Also, when Marcus recruits Jimmy, the recruitment process is in the back of a car. Even though this is an undercover unit, that wouldn't happen.
I also felt that the dialogue, at times was stilted. As example, when Marcus and Jimmy are talking they are using full names, Marcus and James. Police use shortened names or the rank of another officer when referring to them.
