A Shetland journalist who has been working in London returns to the islands only to turn up dead in the Fiscal's yoal. Jimmy Perez, still traumatised by the events of the last book, reluctantly helps with the investigation.

An absorbing read that left me disorientated whenever I had to resurface to deal with real life.

I was familiar with the investigator Jimmy Perez and the Shetland Islands from watching the first few seasons of the TV series.

An artist spots a splash of red against the snow and thinks how beautiful it is. Unfortunately, as she nears, it is clear it is a scarf belonging to a very dead teen age girl.

The most likely suspect is the odd recluse who lives nearby. He’s mentally a bit slow and since his mother died is very lonely. The girl and her friend have visited him a time or two on a dare. In addition, he was the prime suspect in a murder that happened twenty years ago. The police believed he knew more than he was saying and treated him badly.

The Shetland Islands are a sparsely inhabited island group where everyone knows everyone – there are a few newcomers in the mix but mostly the inhabitants know each others’ history and business.

There were lots of good twists and turns. I thought the characters were interesting and a good diverse mix. They ranged from high school kids, long time inhabitants, newcomers and a variety of professions and ages. I’ll be going on with this series. 4 stars

The latest in the Vera Stanhope series is a good one, involving a girl missing from a group home for troubled kids. The team is joined by a new detective, brash and eager to prove herself, a very different kind of cop than the detective whose shoes she's filling after the tragic events of the previous book in the series. Their investigation takes them to a village where an eerie tradition involves a witch chasing children among the "Dark Wives", large standing stones, but clues also lead to the private company that has taken over management of group homes, a development that Vera strongly opposes.

I did have a bit of trouble with the motivation of one of the characters but overall the plotting and pacing are excellent, along with the character development. An enjoyable entry in a solid series.

When a staff member at a home for troubled teens is found murdered and a fourteen year old female resident of the home disappears, Vera and her team are drawn to the countryside of Northumberland to investigate.

I really enjoy Ann Cleeves’ writing, having read her Two Rivers series. This book is the eleventh of the Vera Stanhope series (there are also some short stories); it is the second I have read. Some may recognize the name Vera Stanhope from the very successful TV series based on these stories starring Blenda Blethyn and available on a number of streaming platforms.

Vera is a bit overweight and unkempt, very forthright, and no fashion plate. She isn’t always a team player. She is, however, a stellar detective.

Cleeves is an excellent writer. All of her books that I have read have been engrossing, well plotted, with good character development. Her atmospheric, descriptive, detailed language draws the reader into the scenes.

I did like the new addition to the team, Rosie Bell. She is also quite the character! Although the main players’ stories progress with successive books, each one can be read as a stand alone.

Ann Cleeves is recommended for fans of British police procedurals and other mystery lovers.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #StMartinsPress #Minotaur for the DRC.
