Short biography
William T. Coleman grew up in segregated Philadelphia, where the high school swim team disbanded rather than allowing him to join. Coleman went on to Harvard Law School, where he was one of the first Black members of the Law Review. He broke color barriers many times, from being the first Black law clerk of a Supreme Court Justice to being the first Black attorney for an all-White law firm in Philadelphia, to being the second Black person to hold a Cabinet-level position in the US government. Coleman argued nineteen (19) cases before the US Supreme Court and not just through his involvement with the NAACP. A lifelong Republican, his memoir noted the many people he worked with along the way, Democrat and Republican, Black and White. (-karenb)
