- Short biography
- Mary Constance Wyndham was the eldest of the three daughters of Hon. Percy Wyndham and his wife Madeline Campbell. "The Wyndham Sisters" were the subjects of a famous group portrait by John Singer Sargent. In 1883, she married Hugo Charteris, Lord Elcho, and became Lady Elcho, the name by which she is known as a member of the intellectual circle called The Souls. Lord Elcho became the 11th Earl of Wemyss in 1914, and she was known thereafter as Countess of Wemyss. She was one of the great society hostesses of the Edwardian era.
