Francis de Croisset débute par des poésies et des chroniques et se consacre presque aussitôt au théâtre où il fait représenter des comédies légères, assez audacieuses, très bien accueillies par le public : Qui trop embrasse, Chérubin, Le Paon, Le Coeur dispose. Il recherche le scandale avec des comédies d’une audace calculée, et devient, par son œuvre mais aussi par sa vie privée, omniprésent dans la presse du temps.
A partir de 1915, il collabore avec Robert de Flers avec lequel il donne : Les Vignes du Seigneur, Les Nouveaux Messieurs, Le Docteur Miracle.
Durant la dernière partie de sa vie, il voyage beaucoup et rapporte d'Asie des livres d'impression qui sont probablement le meilleur de son ceuvre : La Féerie cinghalaise, Nous avons fait un beau voyage, La Côte de Jade.
Il a publié également un roman : La Dame de Malacca.

Après avoir été fiancé avec Mlle Dietz-Monin, il épouse en secondes noces, en 1910, Marie-Thérèse de Chevigné, descendante du Marquis de Sade et mère de Marie-Laure de Noailles. Ils emménagent à partir de 1912 la Villa Croisset à Grasse.

Élégant, brillant, mondain, il inspire à Marcel Proust la métamorphose de Bloch en Jacques du Rozier dans À la recherche du temps perdu.
