Short biography
"Joe Cummings was born in New Orleans, and raised in California, France and Washington DC. In high school he developed a taste for rock guitar and subversive politics, playing in a succession of garage bands while publishing an underground newspaper. After he graduated from college, the Peace Corps granted his request to be posted to Thailand, where he served as an English lecturer at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Bang Mot, Thonburi. He later earned a master's degree in South Asian Civilization from the University of California at Berkeley, and was a scholar in residence at the East-West Center in Hawaii."

Good basic overview of Thailand. Plenty of useful maps and tidbits of information. Well organized and typical of Lonely Planet guides.

This is one of the better editions of Lonely Planet's World Food series. It's explanation of Thai food culture is excellent. However, it also advices on restaurants in a few cities, and the relevance of these recommendations may have faded over time.

Why would you even want to visit Thailand without this book?

The pre-2004-tsunami edition and even before that in desperate need of updating. The Thailand LP lives up to the usual standards, but it is essential to have the newest edition since places change a lot.
