For public purposes these are very well served lectures that guide through a general outline of several clusters of historical beliefs among the Romans, Greeks and some other cultures, retracing their mutations and changes. Seldom they are accentuating which ones were absorbed into the Christian worldview. It is a cleverly composed work, which at its foundation is secular, yet of high necromantic value for intentful researchers. One may rely on the visions of sages, speculation of the poets, to the contrary - the crowd and the atheist Epicurean uncrowns their vista, yet to the detriment of the link between the world of the living and Thanathos in Veils that sustained bears poisoned fruits that heal both worlds, if understood properly.… (more)

This is must have in your science library, the ground breaking work of Franz Cumont shows that the ceremonies and dogma of Christianity have roots in other religions, notably the Roman version of a Mithra, originally a Persian god. The last supper, afterlife of Christ, etc are show in this archeology. This is the first English language translation edition, taken from the second revised French Edition, published one year after the first publication in 1902. Cumont suffered greatly for this work, as he was unable to gain full professorial status due to powerful religious leader opposition. However, he came to USA and gained considerable fame. This work includes a fold out map and many illustrations.… (more)
