One of my favorites this year. Reminds me of Sofia Samatar's The Winged Histories.

Not as much of a feminist slant (though half the main characters are women and they're no slouches) but a similar preoccupation with memory, history, who gets to preserve it and why and how and to what ends.

I loved this, it’s beautifully written and one of the most original stories I’ve read in some time. I really enjoyed the world-building and magical system, and there was plenty of action to keep the pages turning, but it was the journey of discovery and personal growth of each character (with mixed results) that made this a really touching human tale. I feel this is one that I’m going to be thinking about for a while.
