Hélène Carrère d'Encausse, née Zourabichvili, was born in France to a family descended from wealthy Georgian aristocrats. She studied at the Sorbonne and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). She then went on to became a renowned historian and author of more than 20 books, specializing in modern Russian history. In 1990, she was the third woman ever elected to the Académie française, and became its Permanent Secretary in 1999. She married Louis Édouard Carrère; their son Emmanuel Carrère is a writer and director, and daughter Marina Carrère is a journalist. Her brother Nicolas Zourabichvili is a composer.
