- Saint-Evremond studied law in Paris and then joined the French Army in 1629. He served through a great part of the Thirty Years' War, distinguishing himself at the siege of Landrecies (1637), when he was made captain. During this time, he studied the works of Montaigne and learned Spanish and Italian. He was a friend of Louis-Charles-Gaston, duc de Candale (of whom he left a very severe word portrait). Saint-Evremond had to live in exile from France after 1661 as a consequence of his attacks on French policy. He wrote mainly for his friends and didn't intend his works to be published -- most of them only appeared in print after his death.

Mr Lamb has lately taken it into his head to read St Evrcmont and works of that stamp I neither praise nor blame him for it He observed that St Evremont was a writer half way between Montaigne and Voltaire with a spice of the wit of the one and the sense of the other I said I was always of opinion that there had been a great many clever people in the world both in France and England but I had been sometimes rebuked for it Lamb took this as a slight reproach for he has been a little exclusive and national in his tastes… (more)
