After taking Honour Moderations in Mathematics, he spent his last two years at Oxford reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics. From 1932, except for a break of two years for writing, he taught mathematics, economics and philosophy at Winchester, where he was a housemaster from 1947 to 1963. He contributed to philosophical journals, and was married in 1933.
