Aili and Austin Flint will read from their new translation of Finnish author Marja-Liisa Vartio's novel “The Parson's Widow” (Dalkey Archive Press, 2008). Marja-Liisa Vartio (1924-1966) is a major Finnish author who wrote lyric poetry, short stories, radio plays, and five novels. She became a central literary figure who helped renew prose writing in 1950s Finland with modernist symbolism and a daring use of time and points of view. Vartio's novels continue to be reissued in Finland, where some have been adapted for the stage. Her work has been translated into many languages, although “The Parson's Widow” is her first book to appear in English. (lampbane)
