Reimagining Detroit: Come discuss Detroit’s future with author John Gallagher as he talks about his new book Reimagining Detroit: Opportunities for Redefining an American City as part of the 2011 Michigan Notable Authors Tour. Experts estimate that perhaps 40 square miles of Detroit are vacant, a level of emptiness that creates a landscape unlike any other big city. John Gallagher has covered urban redevelopment for the Detroit Free Press for two decades and spent a year researching what is going on in Detroit precisely because of its open space and the dire economic times. Instead of presenting another account of the city’s decline, this book showcases the innovative community-building work happening in the city and focuses on what else can be done to make Detroit leaner, greener and more economically self-sufficient. When: Wednesday, May 11 at 7:00pm Where: Southfield Public Library Meeting Room This program and the Michigan Notable Book Awards are made possible thanks to support from the Michigan Humanities Council, Cooley Law School, the Library of Michigan, the Library of Michigan Foundation, Auto Owners Insurance and the Michigan Center for the Book. Media partners are MittenLit.com, WKAR, City Pulse, Queue Advertising and Gennara Photography. (Southfield_Library)
