Nicci Gerrard grew up in Worcestershire with two sisters and a brother. She was educated at The Alice Ottley School and then studied English literature at Oxford University. She taught literature in Los Angeles and London. She founded a women's magazine before becoming a freelance journalist and novelist. During that time she married and had two children. After a divorce from her first husband, she met Sean French while working as editor for the New Statesman where French wrote a weekly column.
