The documentary traces the roots of Goldwater's conservative philosophy through his 1964 presidential campaign against Lyndon Johnson; and later, how his libertarian mindset led him to diverge from social-conservatives in the '80s and '90s. The film also shows how Goldwater won friends and admirers from both sides of the political aisle, with clips from home movies, archival footage, and interviews with prominent politicians such as Hillary Clinton, Edward Kennedy, John McCain, Al Franken, Walter Cronkite, the Goldwater family, and former members of the Senator's staff.
