This was my first time reading a novel by Ann Granger. Lizzie Martin takes up the post of companion to her godfather's widow. Circumstances and a brief association with a Scotland Yard inspector puts her directly in the path of a murder mystery. Overall, I thought this was a solid story with likable main characters and just enough twists and turns to keep me interested.

I'm a little surprised by the mediocre ratings on Goodreads but as often happens lately, my opinion didn't align with the majority of reviews. I do plan to read book two in the series, [b:A Mortal Curiosity|2717149|A Mortal Curiosity (Lizzie Martin, #2)|Ann Granger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1312002825l/2717149._SY75_.jpg|2742745].… (more)

This is book #2 in the Lizzie Martin series. Lizzie knows she must find a new source of employment soon as the situation as a companion to her late godfather's widow becomes untenable. She finds herself in a temporary position, this time as a companion to a young woman living with two aunts. Another murder mystery ensues. Who is sane and who isn't???

Book number eight in the Inspector Ben Ross mystery series was a treat to read. Aunt Parry prays on Lizzie's sense of responsibility and empathy to accompany her on another trip to New Forest. It ends up being the opposite of a 'restorative' vacation. More mysterious circumstances surrounding a crime requires the assistance of Inspector Ross to figure out who-done-it, although Lizzie makes her own contributions to solving the case.

Inspector Ben Ross investigates another Victorian crime in foggy London, this time involving a young woman. Not to be outdone, his wife Lizzie makes her own investigative contributions to the case. Both Ben and Lizzie are likeable and level headed characters. There are a lot of historical details in this well composed story with changes in venue outside of London, which kept things interesting. (I cannot say specifics, otherwise it will give away an interesting detail of the plot.) Needless to say, I was kept guessing who the perpetrator was until the final chapters.
