Murder At A Scottish Castle is the fifth book in the A Scottish Shire Mystery series by Traci Hall.

Paislee Shaw, a knitting shop owner, is excited to visit the castle of Laird Grant, where the Dowager Countess has asked her to sell her knitting at the castle. Also attending are Grandpa, her son Brodie, and Wallace, their Scottish terrier. They will be staying to listen to the annual bagpipe competition that Lord Grant sponsors. Lord Grant had won the competition for several years until last year when he lost to Jory Baxter. Even though there were rumors that Jory cheated the previous year, he has returned to this year's competition, claiming he will win again. Shortly into this year's performance, Jory collapses on stage. Members of the audience rush to attend to Jory and Paislee phones for an ambulance. Paislee’s yarn delivery man, Jerry McFadden, puts the bagpipes under a bench to keep them out of the way of people crowding around the scene. Jory is rushed to the hospital, where he dies shortly after arriving. The police will have a murder case on their hands. But when they go to retrieve the bagpipes, they are gone. The question now is, who moved them and why?

Paislee will naturally want to start her own investigation. She is surprised when DI Zeffer shows up to lead the police’s investigation. She has worked with Zeffer before, and though they have gotten along in the past, she would rather work with someone else. Paislee will find no shortage of suspects as she investigates.

Paislee also has problems at home. Paislee has been out on a date with Hamish McCall, headmaster at Brody’s prior school. As they are standing in the kitchen, the ceiling falls on them. No one is hurt, just embarrassed. I have a feeling that maybe some romantic interest is developing for DI Zeffed from Paislee, finally, in my opinion.

I love this series, and it has terrific and well-developed characters. The story is well-written and plotted. It reads at a good pace and is hard to put down. There were plenty of twists and turns, and I kept guessing who the killer was until the end. Most of the regular characters are back in this book. I especially like the Scottie Wallace.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this delightful series.

Murder at a Scottish Castle is the first book in this series I have had the pleasure to read, but it can definitely be read as a stand-alone too. Loved the accents, slang, and cultural history embedded into the novel, but the characters and setting are what set this one apart from other similar series. Plus, the writing flows well. I love that the MC is a single mom and how her experiences flavor the story as well. I'll be completing this series and plan to check out other works from this author. Perfect for cozy mystery fans who like a little armchair travel in their stories. Recommended.

Paislee Shaw owns Cashmere Crush, a yarn shop specializing in high-end products. She also sells her own designs online and has garnered a following so well that the Dowager Countess of Lyon, Sorcha, has asked her to bring some items to sell in her castle's gift shop. Paislee is surprised but happy, especially when it coincides with the annual bagpiping completion which is to be held at Ramsey Castle. Along with her is her son Brody, her grandpa, and their Scottish terrier, Wallace. All seems to be going well until one of the pipers -- last year's winner -- blows a couple of notes and collapses. When he dies at the hospital, it's at first deemed an accident, but then DI Zeffer steps in and isn't so sure.

Neither is the Dowager Countess. She asks for Paislee's help in proving her son Robert's innocence. While Paislee isn't thrilled, she's rather stuck as she doesn't want to risk not selling her items, nor the displeasure of both the countess and her friend Lady Leery. So Paislee agrees, but she doesn't expect what happens next...

There's an unavoidable disaster that puts part of her life on hold, and she starts falling into depression; but her best friend Lydia steps in and won't allow it. Unfortunately, Lydia can temporarily fix one, but not the other, which means there's a killer still out there somewhere...

This is the fifth book in the series and I have read them all. I also have loved them all. I'm even reading Scottish idioms without a problem, and just breezing through these books. The plot is done very well, and Ms. Hall is very good at what she does -- which is to bring the reader into her books and these in particular, almost as if we were visiting Scotland ourselves (not a bad idea!)

I have become quite fond of all of the characters and their quirks, and Paislee has begun to grow a little bit more, which is a good thing. I hope to see her let go a little and let life happen, but time will tell. The 'guest' characters -- those of Castle Ramsey -- are written as they should be, although like Paislee, I do believe that the earl is a bit arrogant, but then again, he was probably raised that way. And I do like Zeffer quite a bit as well. He's intelligent and knowing, but reserved; just as a DI should be.

The murderer was unexpected and came out of left field, but that's what a good mystery should do, right? In the end, the reason for the murder was as twisted as can be in a murderer's mind, but ah, well, it all turned out right after all, and I await the next mystery eagerly. I cannot wait to see what is next in store for Paislee and her clan. Highly recommended.

I was given an advance copy of this book from Kensington and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.

Murder At A Scottish Wedding is the fourth book in the A Scottish Shire Mystery series by Traci Hall.

Paisley Shaw is the maid of honor for her best friend, Lydia, and they are in the final preparations before walking down the aisle. But the gold Luckenbooth brooch that her fiance, Corbin Smyth, has given her, a family tradition, is nowhere to be found. Lydia selects another pin and conceals it with part of her wedding dress, and they set off for the march down the aisle. But as they start, a Smyth cousin comes screaming from the restroom, saying she can’t see and stumbles down the front steps. Paisley finds the missing broch in the hand of the victim. The cousin is rushed to the hospital, where she soon dies. It’s soon learned that the brooch was covered with strychnine powder, so someone is trying to stop Lydia from marrying Corbin. Corbin’s stepmother has made it very clear that Lydia isn’t a suitable wife for Corbin. Corbin’s stepmother also claims that there is a curse on the brooch. Regardless if it’s a curse or someone wants to murder Lydia, Paisley and Lydia will combine their efforts to find out who was the murderer.

Paisley’s grandfather also plays a prominent role in this book. Grandpa continues his search for his missing son, Craigh. DI Zeffer, who Paisley usually deals with, spends most of his time searching for Craigh. DI Zeffer does share that Craigh has been working uncover for Scotland Yard but has recently gone missing.

The story is well-written and plotted. Plenty of red herrings kept me guessing until the end as to who the killer was. Most of the characters, who are well-developed and believable, are back again in this book. The book reads at a good pace and was hard for me to put down,

I’m looking forward to the next book is this enjoyable series.
